West Nile Virus Detected In Deceased Birds Mosquitoes

Orange County Health Officials Urge Preventative Measures Due to Mosquito-borne Illness

West Nile Virus Detected in Deceased Birds, Mosquitoes

OC Health Officials Issue Alert, Recommend Safety Precautions

Orange County health officials are urging residents to take preventive measures against mosquito-borne illnesses, especially West Nile virus (WNV), after the virus was detected in deceased birds and mosquitoes in the county.

WNV is a potentially serious illness spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms of WNV can range from mild, flu-like symptoms to severe neurologic illness.

OC Health Officer Dr. Clayton Chau recommends that residents take the following precautions to avoid mosquito bites and reduce their risk of WNV infection:

  • Eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by removing standing water from your property.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Make sure window and door screens are in good repair.
  • Consider using mosquito dunks or larvicides to treat standing water that cannot be removed.

WNV is a potentially serious illness, but it can be prevented by taking simple precautions. By following these recommendations, residents can help reduce their risk of WNV infection.
