Boston Celtics Players 1980s

The Big Three Celtics: Legends of the 1980s

A Dynasty Rejuvenated

The 1980s marked a pivotal era for the Boston Celtics, as the legendary "Big Three" rose to prominence and transformed the team into a dominant force.

Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish

Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish formed the core of the Celtics' success during this decade. Bird, drafted in 1978, quickly established himself as one of the league's top players, leading the Celtics to their first NBA championship in 1981. McHale, acquired in 1980, brought his versatile post play and tough defense to the team. Parish, a seven-time All-Star, provided a steady presence in the paint with his rebounding and shot-blocking.

1980-1981 Season

In the 1980-1981 season, the Celtics compiled an impressive 62-20 record under coach Bill Fitch. Despite losing star center Dave Cowens to retirement, the team remained formidable, led by Bird's 26.6 points per game and McHale's 19.9 points per game. They defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Finals, securing the franchise's 14th championship.
